More Than Just an Internship

Hi there! My name is Elyssa Yunitasari Putri. Currently I am studying Marketing Communication, specialising in Public Relations at Binus University, Jakarta. Just last year on my fifth semester, I got an opportunity to worked as a communication intern at the ASEAN Foundation for a period of four months and to be honest I did not see this kind of opportunity would came into my life.

During the whole four months of doing internship at ASEAN Foundation, I was responsible for creating the content and design of the Foundation’s social media accounts, mostly Instagram as well as supporting the social media analysis. Social media management is one way to achieve the objective of ASEAN Foundation and that is to promote ASEAN awareness to broader audience, particularly the youth. For me personally, this is not an easy task to do. Reaching out to youth across the region is a challenging yet interesting task. However, from all the struggle I have been through, I was not alone, I got people whom I see not just as my friends but as my family who supported me from the beginning of my internship until the end. They have contributed to guide and shape me to be a better version of myself.

One thing for sure, doing internship at the ASEAN Foundation has prepared me for the professional world, it has given me a real picture of how an international organisation operates. Also, after being more aware of what ASEAN Foundation really does and by participating at some ASEAN events, I started to acknowledge that ASEAN has a lot to offer for the people in the region. I think that really highlights its tagline as the community of opportunities.

One of the ASEAN Foundation-supported events that I have participated was the ASEAN Conference on Social Entrepreneurship. Learning more about social enterprises and their causes they are working on has inspired me to appreciate more about community initiatives and the good and socially responsible products and services they have produced.

During my four-month internship I also had the opportunity to do some media relation activities. I helped disseminate press release to highlight some of the Foundation’s activities such as the 2nd ASEAN Foundation Model ASEAN Meeting (AFMAM) in Vientiane, Lao PDR in October last year and the 10th ASEAN Puppets Exchange held in Hanoi last December. I was also assigned to produce report capturing the media coverage of the 2nd AFMAM.

I really thank to the ASEAN Foundation for giving me this rewarding opportunity that I shall cherish forever. Although it was just for a short period of time, I have made lifetime friends and family. I definitely had the most amazing time working at ASEAN Foundation and I really respect the togetherness and how each and everyone support one another. I hope the ASEAN Foundation will keep growing and wishing you more success in the future.
