Coming to its second season, VNMAM 2018, with the backing of the ASEAN Foundation and the support from Center for Sustainable Development Studies (CSDS), was successfully held from 3rd to 5th of August at Marie Curie School in Hanoi. With the topic “Preventing illegal Wildlife Trade across Borders”, the conference was attended by nearly 100 high school and university students coming from all over Vietnam.

VNMAM was honored to have a lineup of experienced advisors and speakers from various institutes, universities, and organisations, ensuring that all information is factual and instilling essential skills and insights for delegates in the conference.

Dr. Vo Xuan Vinh, Deputy Director General of Institute for Southeast Asian Studies, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, who was one of the speakers at VNMAM 2018, asserted that this year’s topic has expressed the sensitiveness, the ability to grasp the situation, the awareness as well as the responsibility of Vietnamese youths towards the region’s environmental issues:

“In a situation where ASEAN is moving towards freedom of travel, beside the benefits that it brings, it has also created an opportunity for international crime to push forward with its illegal acts, wildlife trade included. Not only is this a criminal act, these very actions have degraded biodiversity, making multiple species of animals and plants stand on the verge of extinction, including Vietnam, risking to topple the balanced scale of nature, threatening mankind itself.”

Apart from its intriguing content and thought-provoking theme, VNMAM offers participants the chance to roleplay as an ASEAN leader, understand the legislation process of ASEAN, broaden their knowldge and grow their perspective of ASEAN, express their views, engage in personal development, all while participating in a series of intense and dynamic tasks.

Furthermore, VNMAM is an excellent platform for participants to form a widespread network of like-minded individuals, discover meaningful community projects, and exchange opinions and experiences in an international environment.

After three productive days of training, networking, and engaging in insightful discussions, the conference left a truly profound impact on all of the participants.

VNMAM 2018 was indeed an eye-opening experience, where I discovered what I am truly capable of, where I learnt the importance of my words and actions, where I met friends whom I will forever cherish. If I have to describe VNMAM in just 1 word, I would definitely say: “Inspiring”. The conference inspired me and my fellow delegates to go beyond our interests and think of the future of our world. The incredible chairs, mentors and staffs inspired us to continue working hard. And most importantly, its true value has never been about the prizes but the precious friendships and lessons that we learnt throughout 5 inspiring days. I would like to thank the organisers for coordinating such an amazing event and my fellow delegates who have been great partners since the beginning. Though VNMAM 2018 has just ended, I’m ready for VNMAM 2019! “ -Tien Duy Vu , Delegate of Myanmar, Student of the Olympia School.

VNMAM 2018 has come to an end, but its impact will continue to spread. Vietnam Model ASEAN Meeting is proud to be an intellectual playground for Vietnam’s young generation, helping them to go further on their paths to create positive changes in the ASEAN Community.
