ASEAN Foundation, AIM examines private sector poverty alleviation efforts

More than 50 representatives from the business, academe and non-government sectors attended the “Communities and Companies: Waging the War Against Poverty”, one of the special interest session at the 2009 Asian Forum on Corporate Social Responsibility sponsored by the ASEAN Foundation and Asian Institute of Management (AIM) as part of the project “Mainstreaming Poverty Alleviation Initiatives among ASEAN Member Countries”.

The session highlighted how the private sector in the ASEAN region is working towards addressing poverty alleviation in their respective communities. Presenters from various ASEAN-based organizations underscored the importance of social responsibility and presented the poverty reduction programs of their organizations. Speakers were Mr. Shahid N. Zahid, Lead Professional (Aid Effectiveness) of the ADB Private Sector Operations Department, Mr. Jose Marie Oquinena, Head of Operations, Gawad Kalinga (Philippines) and Mr. Puvan Selvanathan, Chief Sustainability Officer, Sime Darby Berhad (Malaysia). Prof. Nieves Confesor of the AIM Center for Development Management moderated the session. Dr. Filemon A. Uriarte, Jr., ASEAN Foundation Executive Director, delivered the closing remarks.

In his message, Dr. Uriarte emphasized the importance of the project in the hope that it will contribute to bridging the socio-economic gap between the developed and less developed countries in ASEAN. With funding support Japan-ASEAN Solidarity Fund, the project “Mainstreaming Poverty Alleviation Initiatives among ASEAN Member Countries” aims to harmonize poverty alleviation initiatives in ASEAN through sharing of information, development of knowledge products, and networking. The project is seamlessly linked with the ADB Regional Technical Assistance (ADB RETA) on “Regional Knowledge and Partnerships Networks o Poverty Reduction and Inclusive Growth”.

The project is jointly implemented by the ASEAN Foundation and AIM’s Center for Development Management which will run until December 2011. Outputs of the project include case studies and publications on private sector poverty alleviation initiatives, brown bag discussions, presentation of findings in ADB and AIM regional conferences.
