ASEAN Community 2025: Engaging Faith-Based Groups to Enhance Regional Peace and Security

Jakarta, 24 May 2016—The Human Rights Resource Center, with the support of the ASEAN Foundation, the Japan-ASEAN Solidarity Fund, Bahá’í International Community, East West Center, WSD Handa Center for Human Rights and International Justice, and Universitas Indonesia will convene a civil society consultation to engage faith-based groups on the goals set out in the ASEAN 2025 Blueprints.

APEX visits Yangon to Commence Preparations for the One ASEAN Tour

Following a series of successful ASEAN Puppet Exchange projects across Southeast Asia, over 20 puppet artists and musicians from the ASEAN Puppet Exchange (APEX) collective will be in Yangon, Myanmar from 9 – 16 May 2016 to begin work on a One ASEAN puppet performance. Artist to artist workshops for ASEAN’s arts and culture development will be held at the Laurel Art Academy, organised by local puppet troupe Htwe Oo Myanmar. Puppeteers and musicians from Brunei, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Singapore, and Viet Nam will come together to join Myanmar’s artists to develop the first of three combined puppet and music performances this year. The remaining ASEAN Member States will be involved in the second and third performances in 2016. Two showings from the APEX visit will be held at 6.30pm on the 12th of May and 6.30pm on 15th May at Laurel Art Academy’s hall.

A Slice of AEC Pie for ASEAN Farmers?

It started quite clumsy as no one really knew each other when they arrived at Kasetsart University (KU) Home Hotel on 27 March 2016. But toward the end of the study tour, the ASEAN Learning Route on Agricultural Cooperatives (ALRAC) has successfully forged friendships, solidarity and most importantly, a common understanding among ASEAN farmers and government officials on what needs to be done for ASEAN farmers to be able to relish a slice of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) Pie.

A Semester Away in Kyoto
A Semester Away in Kyoto

A second opportunity for ASEAN students to participate in the mobility semester programme at Kyoto University in October 2016, awaits. This time around, Japanese students from Kyoto University will also be eligible to do a semester away in an ASEAN university that is a member of the ASEAN University Network.

“Are we going to make puppets?” that was the first question resonated by a teacher as they walked into the room. They all looked excited and keen to learn about the use of puppets for education. This was a classroom at the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah School (YSHHB) in Brunei Darussalam on the afternoon of Saturday, 9 January 2016.

Twenty (20) students from Bina Nusantara (BINUS) University visited the ASEAN Foundation on 3 December 2015. These students were from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Viet Nam, and they were part of the “ASEAN Journey Programme” organised by Passage to ASEAN (P2A) of which BINUS is a member.

The ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) has been boiled, simmered, stir-fried, roasted and baked in the past decades and it is finally ready for serving since 31 December 2015. Despite its long process of coming into existence, many people in the region, particularly those in the rural areas, have not joined the party and remain uninformed on how to get a slice of that scrumptious AEC pie.
