Scholarship Programme

Since its establishment, the ASEAN Foundation has been providing scholarship grants for the ASEAN youth. Among these are through the Scholarships for Funding the Smart but Poor in ASEAN, The ASEAN Foundation Scholarship for Postgraduate Studies (Phase 1), and The ASEAN Foundation Scholarship Programme (Phase 2).

A number of joint scholarship programmes have been accomplished involving reputable universities and corporate foundations in ASEAN as well as some other ASEAN associated entities.

The scholarship programme illustrates the regional cooperation process, helping Thy Neighbour and, at the same time, promoting the “we” feeling of ASEAN and strengthening the Japan – ASEAN relations.

In undertaking the scholarship programme, the ASEAN Foundation partners with universities that share the same commitment of contributing to the ASEAN Community building process through human resource development in the region. At the same time, the ASEAN Foundation also engages with the ASEAN University Network (AUN), the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organisation – Southeast Asian Regional Centre for Tropical Biology (SEAMEO BIOTROP), and the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organisation – Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEAMEO SEARCA), as well as private sectors through their corporate foundations, i. e. The Siam Cement Group Foundation (SCGF) based in Thailand and the Thabyay Education Network (TEN) in Myanmar, to participate in “joint scholarship programme” in the form of in-kind contribution as well as partial funding for the scholars.

The ASEAN Foundation is getting in touch with the alumni to start an alumni network that can contribute to raising ASEAN awareness through their experiences of studying and living in other ASEAN Member States.

Objectives

  • To pursue high quality human resources within the ASEAN Member States, particularly in functional cooperation area, through postgraduate study for qualified ASEAN youth who need financial assistance.
  • To narrow the development gap among the ASEAN Member States through the development of human resources.
  • To engage private sectors in the ASEAN Community building process.
  • To enhance awareness of ASEAN and promote the development of the ASEAN identity which, over the years, would be the natural outcome when a large number of students from various ASEAN Member States spend time and study in other ASEAN Member States.
