ASEAN Foundation Model ASEAN Meeting (AFMAM) is a flagship youth engagement initiative by the ASEAN Foundation, designed to deepen understanding of ASEAN and strengthen a shared regional identity among students across Southeast Asia. Since its launch in 2015, AFMAM has empowered young people to step into the shoes of ASEAN leaders, offering a first-hand experience of how regional decisions are made at the highest level.

The programme blends intensive workshops led by regional experts with realistic role-playing simulations that replicate the dynamics of ASEAN summits and high-level meetings. Participants develop essential skills in diplomacy, negotiation, critical thinking, and public speaking, while gaining deeper insight into ASEAN’s governance structure and multilateral decision-making processes.

AFMAM is widely recognised as one of the most sought-after platforms for youth diplomacy in the region. Each year, the programme adopts the current ASEAN Chairmanship theme, ensuring that simulations remain relevant and aligned with ASEAN’s real-world priorities.

Over the years, AFMAM has expanded its reach and impact through strategic collaborations, such as AFMAM Plus Australia, AFMAM Plus Japan, and the ASEAN-China Young Leaders Programme, welcoming participants from ASEAN Member States and dialogue partners alike. At the same time, the impact of AFMAM has inspired a wave of local MAM initiatives led by its alumni at universities across the region, creating a powerful ripple effect that continues to expand ASEAN awareness and engagement at the grassroots level.

In 2025, AFMAM is set to introduce its most ambitious edition yet, the AFMAM East Asia Summit (AFMAM EAS), supported by Australia, China, and Japan, in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the East Asia Summit.

To date, the programme has trained 569 students and faculty members, equipping them with the knowledge and confidence to contribute meaningfully to the region’s future.
