What happens when passionate young changemakers from across Southeast Asia come together to explore the themes of peace and tolerance? The result is a powerful exchange of ideas, culture, and commitment to building a more inclusive ASEAN.

On 20 February 2025, the ASEAN Foundation, in partnership with the Mission of Canada to ASEAN, hosted a regional workshop in Jakarta as part of the ASEAN Youth Empowerment for Peacebuilding and Tolerance (AYEPT) programme. This gathering marked the culmination of a two-week online course, where participants explored core themes of intercultural communication and social cohesion. The in-person workshop brought together 11 youth delegates from ASEAN and Timor-Leste for an intensive day of discussions, brainstorming, and capacity building aimed at advancing tolerance and peace in their home communities.

Designed to nurture a new generation of peacebuilders, AYEPT combines interactive learning with practical application. Through the programme, participants engaged in dynamic panel discussions, skills workshops, and the impactful Interfaith Youth Dialogue, which provided a safe and open space for conversations on religious and cultural diversity. These sessions didn’t just broaden their understanding; they challenged assumptions and strengthened participants’ ability to lead constructive dialogues at the community level.

Throughout the workshop, participants delved into the complexities of conflict resolution, inclusive leadership, and grassroots advocacy. They also reflected on their personal journeys, sharing stories of lived experiences that highlighted both the richness and the challenges of growing up in diverse communities across ASEAN. More than just a training, the workshop became a space of inspiration, where differences were celebrated, and unity was forged through empathy and understanding. AYEPT’s impact doesn’t end in Jakarta. With new perspectives and strengthened networks, these young leaders are returning home with renewed purpose and actionable plans to promote peace and tolerance in their respective countries. Whether through campaigns, community dialogues, or school initiatives, their work is just beginning.
