To mark the 31st anniversary of ASEAN-China relations, the ASEAN Foundation, with support from the Mission of the People’s Republic of China to ASEAN, launched the ASEAN-China Young Leaders’ Programme (ACYLP) in 2022. The initiative comprised two flagship activities: the Special ASEAN Foundation Model ASEAN Meeting (AFMAM) Plus China and the 3rd AFMAM Training of Trainers (TOT) Plus China.
The Special AFMAM Plus China brought together talented university students from ASEAN Member States and China to simulate high-level ASEAN diplomatic processes. Participants took on the roles of senior ASEAN and Chinese officials, engaging in structured negotiations and policy debates. The programme fostered a deeper understanding of ASEAN-China relations while sharpening critical skills such as public speaking, consensus-building, strategic thinking, and intercultural communication.
Simultaneously, the AFMAM TOT Plus China equipped aspiring facilitators with essential skills to deliver impactful AFMAM experiences at national and institutional levels. The training covered ASEAN fundamentals, AFMAM methodology, and facilitation best practices, ensuring long-term sustainability of the programme.
ACYLP empowered over 70 young leaders, enhancing their diplomatic acumen and encouraging them to become advocates for stronger ASEAN-China relations. The impact of the programme extended beyond the sessions, inspiring participants to foster collaboration and shared growth in their home countries.
